Wayne Rooney gave a speech to his team-mates inside the England dressing room last night following his record breaking game.
The Manchester United forward drew level with Sir Bobby Charlton by scoring his 49th international goal last weekend against San Marino, but last night reached his 50th in England’s 2-0 win over Switzerland – the first player to ever do so.
He converted his record breaking goal from the penalty spot after some tricky footwork by Raheem Sterling won them the spot kick. Wazza converted for the second time in four days.
Followed by cameras, Wayne walked into the dressing room to applause after the match, before gaffer Roy Hodgson presented with a ‘Rooney 50’ t-shirt.
Then came the speech, prompted by the manager himself: “I’d like to thank every one of you… coaches, players, staff who I’ve worked with for such a long time,” said the 29-year-old.”
“This is such a huge moment for myself, for my family and my career. Hopefully, for the team and for myself, there’s a lot more to come.”
“We can be successful and hopefully there’s a lot of the younger lads – Harry [Kane], Ross [Barkley], Raheem [Sterling] coming through – who can come close and even pass me in the future.”
“I’m grateful. It means the world to me. Thank you very much.”
