WhatsAppWhatsApp has been forced to explain why it was down for several hours last night, putting 1.2 billion disgruntled members out of service.
The international messaging service went down yesterday – Wednesday 3rd May at 4:50pm – and came back on late last night, after going offline at peak time for a number of hours.
Users were understandably put out and questioning why they were unable to use the popular free service, the Business Insider reports.

The spokeperson for WhatsApp said in an email:
Earlier today, WhatsApp users in all parts of the world were unable to access WhatsApp for a few hours.
We have now fixed the issue and apologize for the inconvenience.
Mysteriously, the outage was caused by an internal error in WhatsApp itself and not by an ‘external source.’

WhatsApp was asked if all of its users were affected, to which it replied it was a ‘global’ outage, which suggested that many users across the world were indeed completely out of service.
Strangely the outage coincided with the senior management team’s quarterly-earnings conference call, with Wall Street analysts. Apparently the outage was not mentioned in the meeting… we wonder why?
This is not great for the social media networking service owned by Facebook, which is the single most popular social networking tool in the world.

So far there has been no further explanation for the total global wipe out. However, it is thought the outage has something to do with a huge new feature being added to the service.
Very odd indeed.
