Mrs Yusufiy said:

When he would get in his tempers, he would express hate toward everything.

He was mentally unstable and mentally ill: that’s the only explanation that I could give.

So-called Islamic State have claimed responsibility for the vicious attack, and the Amaq News Agency report that Mateen was an ‘Islamic State fighter’.

They said:

The armed attack that targeted a gay night club in the city of Orlando in the American state of Florida which left over 100 people dead or injured was carried out by an Islamic State fighter.

The reports follow an FBI statement saying they had ‘suggestions’ gunman Mateen had ‘leanings’ towards radical Islamic terrorism.

It’s also being reported that Mateen called the emergency services and pledged allegiance to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the head of ISIS, before committing the attack.

Officials have said however that there’s no ‘immediate evidence’ of any direct connection with Daesh or any other foreign extremist group.

Meanwhile it’s emerged that Mateen’s father Seddique Mateen is a Taliban sympathiser who had ambitions of becoming the Afghan president.

Seddique, who has publicly apologised for his son’s hideous attack, once hosted a TV show on an U.S.-based Afghan satellite channel where he declared his candidacy for the Afghan presidency, and expressed his strong political views.

According to The Washington Post in one episode he said: “Our brothers in Waziristan, our warrior brothers in [the] Taliban movement and national Afghan Taliban are rising up.”

Omar Mateen’s rampage took the lives of 50 people and wounded 53 more making it the deadliest single U.S. mass shooting incident ever.

President Obama has paid tribute to those killed in the attack saying as Americans, they are ‘united in grief, in outrage and resolve to defend our people’.
