Step Brothers is one of most hilariously laugh-out-loud movies of Will Ferrell’s career, perhaps even rivalling the mighty Anchorman for sheer comic quotability.
During 98 glorious minutes we watch Brennan Huff (Ferrell) and Dale Doback (John C. Reilly) grow from being feuding adult stepbrothers to best friends to CEO’s of Prestige Worldwide.
It’s an emotional and often gross-out journey for both men-children. Packed with drum set violation, sleepwalking and senseless yacht destruction.
And it looks like we might well be getting another invitation to the Catalina Wine Mixer…
Fans have long hoped for a sequel, however the follow up plot was always going to be an issue.
The original film’s narrative centred around Dale and Brennan’s inability to fly from the family nest, with their childlike antics jarring with their straight-laced parents providing much of the humour.
However, when we last left Dale and Brennan, they were showing signs of becoming fully functional – and even successful – adults.
So what kind of mayhem can we expect from this new, slick pair of stepbrothers? Will they have stuck to their bunk bed building roots, or will they have turned into corporate monsters like the one they call Derek?
Ferrell recently discussed a potential premise for Step Brothers 2, and it sounds pretty great.
He told the New York Daily News an idea director Adam McKay and he had cooked up:
We talked about Step Brothers and then Adam and I got sidetracked with other things.
We had a whole story where John and I follow our parents to live in a retirement community and try to convince them that we earned the right to retire as well.
However, Ferrell also noted it was important to be cautious when making sequels to beloved films, as he has learnt from some of his other ventures:
The sequel thing is so funny because, we decided obviously to go down the road with Anchorman, and we made what I though was a great sequel, really funny.
The entertainment industry and fans beg you, and beg you, and beg you for sequels and then you make it and you definitely have a fraction that’s like, ‘Well, not as good as the first one’.
So I guess it’s a catch-22. It’s a nice catch-22, because people love the movies in the first place.
Even though Ferrell is still keeping things vague, he has previously showed enthusiasm for a potential sequel to the cult comedy classic.

On What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, he gave the following teasing statement:
We talked a little bit about Step Brothers, but who knows… but at the same time, you like to create new things.
Farrell and Reilly’s comic chemistry was easily the best thing about Step Brothers, so even if we aren’t going to get another encore of Boats n’ Hoes, we still have Holmes and Watson to get excited about.
Holmes and Watson is due out November 9, 2018.
