Wimbledon tennis champion, Petra Kvitova, has been injured in a knife attack at her home in the eastern Czech town of Prostejov.

The two-time Czech tennis champion suffered wounds to the tendons in her left hand after a thug broke into her home and attacked her with a knife in a botched burglary.

According to Karel Tejkal, a spokesman for Kvitova, the 26-year-old athlete is being treated by her doctors after sustaining the injuries.

The Independent reports the attack happened in the early hours of Tuesday morning, local time.

Kvitova has pulled out of next month’s internationally renowned tennis tournament, the Hopman Cup.

She tweeted:

I am so disappointed I will be unable to play at the Hopman Cup. The results of a scan have confirmed that my foot is healing but not as quickly as we would have liked.

The foot injury that forced her to withdraw is ongoing and unrelated to last night’s attack.

Her injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

Police are yet to release a statement.
