A woman who belongs to the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster has been allowed to wear a pasta strainer on her head in her driver’s license photo due to her religious beliefs.
Making a play for greatest troll in the universe, Massachusetts resident Lindsay Miller claims that wearing the colander allows her to express her beliefs, just like other religions are allowed to do.
The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles says usually head coverings are not permitted for license photos, but exceptions are made for religious beliefs, like Miller’s.
Her application was initially denied, but she won her right to wear the cooking utensil on her head via appeal when she cited her religious beliefs.
Speaking to the Associated Press, she said:
As a member of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, I feel delighted that my Pastafarianism has been respected. While I don’t think the government can involve itself in matters of religion, I do hope this decision encourages my fellow Pastafarian Atheists to come out and express themselves as I have.
And, by the way, the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is an actual thing. The satirical movement promotes a light-hearted view of religion and followers often call themselves ‘Pastafarians’.
If you were wondering, the Flying Spaghetti Monster himself is a benevolent supernatural entity who created the world around 4,000 years ago while he was drunk, although the world is intentionally built to make humans think it’s older than it really is.
This isn’t even the first time collanders and driving license photos have been brought together in perfect harmony. Last year, a similar incident happened in Utah involving former porn star, Jessica Steinhauser (aka. Asia Carrera), who said she intended to make a statement through her actions.
