Getty/Queen Elizabeth Olympic ParkRemember that massive sculpture that was built in London for the 2012 Olympics? Well, much to the delight of big kids everywhere, they’re turning it into the world’s biggest helter-skelter.
After all the comments about how Anish Kapoor’s ‘Orbit Tower’ looked like a fairground attraction, planning bosses took the hint and approved plans to build a 178-metre slide around the structure.
Visitors will hit speeds of 15mph on the giant 12-loop helter-skelter, which will begin from a height of 74m above ground and is expected to last about 40 seconds per ride.
Queen Elizabeth Olympic ParkSpeaking to the Evening Standard, director of visitor services Peter Tudor said:
Now we’ve got to work out how to attach it to the sculpture. It will be manufactured off-site. The real challenge is the construction process – whether to scaffold around the sculpture or whether it can be done by abseiling.
The helter-skelter plans follow an abseiling attraction on the Orbit Tower which opened last year.
The epic new ride is set to open in Spring 2016 and admission is only expected to be around £5. We can’t wait to give this a go!
