Worst Snow Storm In 50 Years Will Hit UK At 3pm

Following the ‘red alert’ weather warning which was issued in Scotland yesterday, it seems things are going to get a lot worse for the rest of the UK too, in terms of snow!

Today, (March 1), the Met Office have warned us to brace ourselves, as the worst blizzards since 1962 are set to hit our shores.

Brits are being warned to only travel if it’s essential, with the vulnerable and elderly being told to completely stay indoors.

The Met Office claimed the amount of snow forecast could be the biggest single fall since the notorious winter of 1962-63, when some areas of the country were blighted by snow and ice for more than three months.

The Met Office has predicted up to 50cm of snow will fall across the southeast by tomorrow, with Scotland facing a similar dose of the stuff.

The heavy snow blizzards, as well as the ‘biting’ winds are predicted to cause significant travel disruption across the UK, most notably in southern, western and central England. Parts of Wales and Northern Ireland are set to be affected too.

Yesterday, (February 28), the Met Office said:

Heavy snow showers and drifting of lying snow in the strong easterly winds will become more widespread across the area later on Wednesday afternoon, through the evening and overnight into Thursday.

Roads will become blocked by deep snow, with many stranded vehicles and passengers. Long delays and cancellations on bus, rail and air travel are expected.

Transport Minister Humza Yousaf said people would be risking their lives if they ignored the advice.

Speaking to BBC Scotland‘s John Beattie, he said:

It couldn’t be clearer, couldn’t be simpler – don’t travel, avoid travel, because if you do you will not only be disrupted but, as I said, potentially putting yourself and others into danger.

I’ve just been on the phone to the MD of ScotRail and they will be winding down their services and suspending them and cancelling them in the red area from 15:00 until 10:00 tomorrow.

He continued:

That’s important to do not just for the welfare of customers, passengers, but clearly for the welfare of ScotRail staff who have to try to get home early.

And that’s the message that I have to emphasise. If you have gone to work and you are in that red area, you should try to get home before 15:00.

We’re doing our best to talk to employers so they can be as flexible as possible too.

If you’re out and about, plan your routes in advance and be sure to check travel information for roads, rail and buses.

Don’t forget to check in on those who are elderly or vulnerable, if possible.
