Previously classified footage of a US fighter jet investigating an unknown aircraft has been made available to the public for the first time.

Like something straight out of a bad science fiction movie the jet was able to track a mysterious flying object hovering off the coast of San Diego, this has led many to believe the unknown aircraft was a genuine alien craft.

Before the footage was made public, it was studied and analysed by a covert multi-million dollar programme built specifically for extracting data from Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs).

The Pentagon has confirmed the existence of an Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Programme (AATIP) which has been running since 2007 to 2012 with an annual funding of $22m (£15m). Before its existence was declassified it had been hidden underneath the US Department Of Defense’s budget.

The officially released footage dates back to 2014 and shows an encounter between two US Navy F/A-18 Super Hornets from the aircraft carrier Nimitz and a flying object which was said to be about the size of a commercial aircraft.

Commander David Fravor and Lieutenant Commander Jim Slaight were the pilots who spotted the UFO. The two were on a routine exercise drill 100 miles out into the Pacific when they were called in to investigating a flying object.

The UFO was detected 80,000 ft by Naval cruiser USS Princeton which had been attempting to track the craft for two weeks.

Talking the New York Times Commander Fravour described the unknown ’40 feet long and oval in shape’ aircraft, which was hovering 50 feet above ground, as ‘…like nothing I’ve ever seen’ and left ‘pretty weirded out’ by what he had seen.

He told the New York Times:

It accelerated like nothing I’ve ever seen…

We were at least 40 miles away, and in less than a minute this thing was already at our cap point…

I have no idea what I saw. t had no plumes, wings or rotors and outran our F-18s. It had no plumes, wings or rotors and outran our F-18s.

Despite coming across an unknown flying object, Fravor and Slaight’s superiors did not let them investigate any further and it remains a mystery as to what both men saw.

Conspiracy theorists will most likely feel vindicated that it is further proof we have visitors from another planet.

However, experts have pointed out there is more likely a ‘worldly explanation’ for this alleged UFO sighting and warn ‘that an absence of an explanation is not proof of extraterrestrial life’.

Whatever it was that Fravor – who has since retired – saw, he says he wants to ‘fly one’.
