PAA huge hidden structure has been found in the centre of the Great Pyramid of Giza, according to scientists.
For decades, what lies in the centre of the pyramid has been hotly debated by experts, and now a new discovery just deepens the mystery.
Scientists working on the structure have found a massive void in the centre of the Great Pyramid, but nobody knows why it’s there.
PAThe internal structure of the pyramid is reportedly above the Grand Gallery, a massive hall between two chambers.
The route is at least 30 metres long, but other than that, little is known about it.
The discovery is the first of its kind since the 19th century, and has been made possible by advances in scientific methods of research.
This discovery was made thanks to the use of cosmic-ray imaging, which allows the researchers to scan deep into the pyramid to get to the bottom of just what is inside.
PADoing this means they can look inside without even having to set foot into the halls and disturb what’s there.
Mehdi Tayoubi, co-founder of the ScanPyramids project and president of the Heritage Innovation Preservation Institute told the Daily Mail:
This is a premier. It could be composed of one or several structures… maybe it could be another Grand Gallery. It could be a chamber, it could be a lot of things.
It was hidden, I think, since the construction of the pyramid.
PAHe told The Telegraph:
We were very surprised to see a big anomaly. We were expecting to detect the King’s chamber and grand gallery but we were surprised to find a big void and we think what we have is very important.
What we are sure if it is there, and it is impressive, it is the same height as the Statue of Liberty.
It could be a second grand gallery, it could be a chamber. We are working with archaeologists to compare it to other chambers, the void is there, it’s very big,
It was not expected by any kind of theory. We are thinking about sending in a very innovative robot that can get through a small hole.
PAHowever, it might not be quite as interesting as what was initially thought, with Dr Kate Spence of the Univeristy of Cambridge saying the void could well be some kind of ramp.
She thinks the ramp could have been used to transport the blocks to the centre of the pyramid and ignored afterwards.
She said:
Although that might not sound as exciting as a secret burial chamber, in fact, this would be the first evidence of an internal ramp, which gives us a really important insight into how those huge bricks were put into position and how pyramids were constructed.
PAWhile the mystery of the Great Pyramid of Giza remains unsolved for now, experts are hoping the new scanning technique could be used to unlock some of the great mysteries of the pyramids in the future.
