PAA discovery, being dubbed ‘one of the most important ever’, has revealed a statue of Egypt’s greatest ruler.
A colossus statue found in a Cairo slum is likely to be of pharaoh Ramses II who ruled Egypt 3,000 years ago.
Because the statue was found near the ruins of Ramses II’s temple in the ancient city of Heliopolis, the Egyptian Antiquities Ministry say it is highly likely it is of the most powerful and celebrated ruler.
PAKhaled al-Anani, antiquities minister, said:
Last Tuesday they called me to announce the big discovery of a colossus of a king, most probably Ramses II, made out of quartzite.
Along with the statue of Ramses II, the bust of King Seti II carved in limestone was found with fine facial features.
PADietrich Raue, head of the Egyptian-German archaeological team, said:
The sun god created the world in Heliopolis, in Matariya. That means everything had to be built here. Statues, temples, obelisks, everything.
The findings associated with Ramses II will be transported to the Grand Egyptian Museum for restoration and display to the public.
