NASAIn 1977, NASA launched the Voyager 1 and 2 spacecrafts, sending them on a course out of our solar system, and if any aliens happen to pick them up then there are messages on board to explain human life.
The information is stored on a pair of golden records, one per craft, along with instructions on how to use a device in order to play them.
The records contain 116 images, 90 minutes of music, spoken greetings in over 50 languages, and a message from then President of the United States, Jimmy Carter.
The images included are intended to give a glimpse of what it is to be human, our society and our biology, but nothing is included regarding war, poverty, disease, crime, ideology, or religion.
Smart move. No aliens in their right mind would come anywhere near us if they actually knew what was going on down here.
NASA/VoxBoth Voyagers are sending messages back to the earth, with Voyager 1 officially escaping our solar system and 2 to follow in the next few years, but it is estimated they will both run out of power during the 2020s.
Time is hardly of the essence though as the power was always going to run out. Traveling in the vacuum of space it will be another 40,000 years before Voyager 1 comes within 1.7 light-years of a star in the Ursa Minor constellation. Voyager 2 will reach a star in the Andromeda constellation at a similar point in time.
