A 0.5km charity race, which has designated smoking areas and free beer, was a huge success as $20,000 was raised to feed school kids.
Officially sanctioned by the Society for Lazy and Carefree Runners (SLACR), the Boerne 0.5k took place in Texas yesterday, (May 5), and saw ‘underachievers’ race for a good cause.
The sold out event saw people ‘run’ 500m to raise money for Blessings in a Backpack, a non-profit organisation which provides food over weekends for school kids who might otherwise go hungry.
Encouraging those who hate exercise to take part, there was no need to run the distance – you were even provided with free beer, coffee and donuts at the halfway mark.
It’s no wonder the race was a massive success!
If you fancied paying an additional $25 for VIP privileges, you didn’t even have to use your legs to complete the race, as you could do it in a restored VW Campervan with a beer at the start and finish – if you chose to take part in this stylish way, you got an even bigger medal!
The inaugural event took place at River Road Park yesterday morning.
According to the sign up website, RunSignUp, this is what you could expect from the Boerne 0.5k:
Finishers will receive a pretentious oval Euro-style 0.5k sticker to attach to their rear windshield to show everyone ‘what a badass you are’. T-shirts, of course.
Participation medals (everyone gets recognised for their achievements at this event, no matter how bad they are, because we are all about positivity and self-worth.)
Coffee and donut station at the halfway point for carb-loading and energy. This will also be where the designated smoking area is. Finish line photos.
Individual and group costume contests with prizes. Cool sunglasses, cowboy hats, short shorts, Spurs gear, pyjamas, you name it. Come dressed for fun! Medical Tent. Awards Presentation at CCB Live music at both brewpubs!
The world’s best bagpipe player (well, maybe not the best in the whole wide world, but certainly the best bagpipe player you will hear that day) will play Amazing Grace at the start of the race.
Much, much, much more (as we think of things.)
It’s a shame the event sold out so quickly – we’ll have to keep our eyes peeled for next time!
According to the Blessings in a Backpack website, one in five American children face food insecurity, relying on the meals they get at school.
When school finishes on Friday, over 87,000 children have empty bellies for 65 hours until they return to the classroom.
However, the organisation wants to change this, as stated in their mission statement:
Blessings in a Backpack mobilises communities, individuals and resources to provide food on the weekends for elementary school children across America who might otherwise go hungry.
Every school-aged child in America has the nourishment needed to learn and grow. As a leader in the movement to end childhood hunger, Blessings strives to ensure children don’t go hungry on the weekends by empowering individuals and communities to take action.
I’m sure the $20,000 the race raised will feed hundreds of hungry children!
