Danny Drinkwater and Jamie Vardy are no strangers to success – at least this season anyway.

But their route to the top of the game is one few have travelled in their careers, as they ploughed their way through the lower leagues before arriving in the English top flight, and winning the Premier League with Leicester City.

Vardy’s story has been told countless times this season – released by Sheffield Wednesday (who may make it into the Premier League by the time England play Portugal next week) aged 16, before signing for Stocksbridge Park Steels, FC Halifax Town and Fleetwood Town, then becoming the first £1m non-league player.

Drinkwater had a similar story, after being released from Manchester United without making a first team appearance, following four years out on loan.

The 26-year-old called Huddersfield Town, Cardiff City Watford and Barnsley his home before making the permanent switch to Leicester, where success soon followed.

It’s proof that sometimes things take time, but the cream always rises to the top.

For England this summer, the talent is there, and with players possessing the work ethic like Vardy and Drinkwater, it can only be a good thing for Roy Hodgson’s Three Lions.
