Belgium have knocked five-time World Cup winners, Brazil, out of the 2018 tournament at the quarter-final stages.
In what’s been described by some viewers as possibly the ‘best’ game yet, Belgium managed to knock out one of the tournament favourites.
Benefiting from a Fernandinho own goal and rapturous strike from Kevin De Bruyne, Belgium went into half time with a commanding 2-0 lead.
Brazil looked down and out for long periods of the second half, but following the introduction of Douglas Costa, serious questions were starting to be asked of Roberto Martinez’s men.
A penalty appeal was rejected by everyone’s favourite referral system, VAR, but Brazil battled to earn a lifeline as Renato Augusto rose to head in from a Philippe Coutinho cross on 76 minutes.
The rest of the game was played out with Brazil dominating proceedings, searching for an equaliser and to force extra time. Alas, it would never come.
The result sees Belgium through to the semi-finals where they’ll meet Didier Deschamps’ France side, following their 2-0 victory over Uruguay.
With no World Cup wins to speak of, maybe Belgium are finally on their way to the final.
Of course, so are England, and we all know it’s coming home, so Belgium should enjoy their win while they can!
