Dana White Says Conor McGregor Has Huge Fight Choice To Make

Conor McGregor has some big decisions to make, and that has come straight from the top of the UFC.

As reported by Fox Sports, UFC president Dana White says ‘The Notorious’ will be the man to decide whether he defends his 145lbs featherweight belt, or moves into a new division.

White confirmed McGregor won’t be stripped of his belt, but expects the champ to either defend it or vacate it.

White told NBC Sports Radio:

He’s not going to get stripped. He’s going to make a decision. He knows the Nate Diaz fight isn’t the fight to make right now.

He has to either defend his title or give it up and decide what he wants to do next. We’ll get that figured out with him.

McGregor’s previous two fights have been at welterweight, both against Nate Diaz, but that sequence of events was born out of the Irishman’s desire to be the first fighter in the UFC to simultaneously hold titles in two divisions – the original plan being to fight then 155lbs champ Rafael Dos Anjos for the lightweight belt back in March.

RDA pulled out with injury setting up the first two installments of a promised trilogy with Diaz, and despite McGregor insisting the third will be at 155lbs, it is unlikely to be his next fight.

The options that potentially lie on the horizon would be a featherweight title rematch with José Aldo, who became the division’s interim strap holder after defeating Frankie Edgar at UFC 200, or should McGregor choose not to cut back to 145lbs he could start his bid to become lightweight champ.

Eddie Alvarez is currently the man who would stand in McGregor’s way having convincingly defeated RDA during UFC 200’s fight week – but if McGregor wants to be a two-division champion that bout will have to play second to taking on Aldo.
