Demba Ba suffered one of the worst leg breaks ever in China at the weekend.

The 31-year-old former Chelsea striker tangled with Sun Xiang in Shanghai Shenhua’s derby game against Shanghai SIPG, resulting in a horror break and fears that he would have to retire.

But the Senegalese striker has refused to end his career, and is already planning his comeback once the injury has healed.

Speaking to Radio Monte Carlo, Ba said:

This is a really bad injury but I know I can overcome it. I won’t call time on my career, that’s for sure.

There are other players who have returned from similar injuries, like Hatem Ben Arfa.

Something similar happened to me earlier in my career and the treatment options are much better now. I think I’ll make a speedier return this time.

The season here ends in November and the new one starts in March. I’ll do my best to return in time for the season after that.

Incredibly, after Ba woke up in hospital after the injury, the first thing he asked was ‘did we win?’.

Win they did, as Shenhua came from 1-0 down to win 2-1, thanks to a 95th minute penalty from Fredy Guarin.

Ba will undergo surgery this week on the injury, with French doctors flying out to China to perform the operation.

Here’s hoping Ba comes back stronger, and continues the type of form that netted him 14 goals in 18 games this season.
