It was the game everyone had been waiting for.
Hosts France faced off against underdogs Portugal in the final of Euro 2016, and while most people had Antoine Griezmann’s side down as the favourites, any team with Cristiano Ronaldo in it has a chance. A very big chance indeed.
Sadly for the Portugal skipper, Dimitri Payet ended his final on the 25th minute, and then came the substitution and the tears.
The game itself was dire, but Twitter users were in fine form – naturally.
The internet loved it.
Before the game, all eyes were on Ronaldo’s last chance for international glory..
Ferdinand loves to brag about knowing Ronaldo personally

I just want to see Ronaldo cry.

Then the superstar had to come off with injury…
Ronaldo down again and looks close to tears.

The professionals were gutted for him…
Its a shame if C.Ronaldo has to come off. You want to see the great players on the pitch in finals
— Rio Ferdinand (@rioferdy5) July 10, 2016
Terrible to see Cris come off like that. Hope it's nothing too bad ??
— Gareth Bale (@GarethBale11) July 10, 2016
What is it about Ronaldos in major finals in Paris. What a shame!
— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) July 10, 2016
It’s all the moths fault…
Very sad for Ronaldo. I blame the moths #FRAPOR

Good to see we still have a sense of humour in this difficult time. Maybe not the best sense of humour, but oh well. pic.twitter.com/aQIw09d5wO

Sissoko was also trending…
What has Moussa Sissoko eaten today? Absolute warrior #FRA #Euro2016

It's sad. I wish Sissoko was a player we were able to be proud of for representing us this well, but no. I couldn't care less. #NUFC

Sissoko's performance in this tournament has doubled the sale price of Newcastle United. #Euro2016

The game itself wasn’t a classic…
This game requires that meme of someone poking it with a stick, saying: “Do something."
— Andrew Gaffney (@GaffneyVLC) July 10, 2016
A fitting final. Sadly.
— Raphael Honigstein (@honigstein) July 10, 2016
Giroud came off after doing, well, not very much…
Portugal's chances just deteriorated. Giroud's off.
— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) July 10, 2016
Giroud, who has been hopeless again, off for Gignac
— Mark Ogden (@MarkOgden_) July 10, 2016
Gignac and Eder coming on to spice this game up. ffs.
— Coral (@Coral) July 10, 2016
Sadly, we had to sit through extra time…
A plague of moths have been more exciting than this match. #Euro2016Final

Alan Shearer: "This game sums up the tournament for me. Pretty dull; pretty boring". It's as if he's never heard himself speak.
— Kitbag (@KitbagUK) July 10, 2016
Rui Patricio got a mention…
Wow, Rui Patricio is on fire. Incredible saves.
— Mitheriel (@Mitheriel) July 10, 2016
#POR got every single bounce to go their way for 90 minuets on #FRA home soil. Also, Rui Patricio can't be beaten! pic.twitter.com/dg3p3wdGFS

7 – Since 1980, no goalkeeper has made more saves in a EURO final than #POR's Rui Patricio (@Pschmeichel1 also 7 v Germany in 1992). Heroic.

Eder won it for Portugal…
Eder, you beauty. #POR
— Huba huba! (@popokman) July 10, 2016
That had been brewing for Eder. He was bossing France all over the field.
— E. García Gundersen (@Erik_Gundersen) July 10, 2016
Wtf?! It was Eder!
