Let’s be honest here, Chelsea haven’t exactly had the start to the season that they were expecting, or wanting for that matter.
A 2-2 draw at home to Swansea, and a crushing 3-0 defeat at title rivals Manchester City has certainly left a sour taste in the mouths of Chelsea supporters.
The addition of Pedro will certainly be one that’ll excite the Chelsea supporters, and re-ignite them with a bit of belief that they can defend their title this season – even more so after Ed Woodward was on a flight out to Spain to secure the signature of the Barcelona winger.
Manchester United fans look away, as you’ll be about to read what you’re missing out on should Pedro complete his move to Jose Mourinho’s men.
It’s a long list, but here are five biggest attributes the winger will bring to Chelsea.
Honours
This lad has a longer list of awards than Louis van Gaal had glasses of wine at United’s end of season dinner.
Countless winners’ medals in the Champions League, La Liga, Copa del Rey, among others at club level, and combine that with a World Cup win, and a European Champions winners medal, and you’ve got yourself a half decent footballer.
It’s pretty safe to say he’s willing to add several more major trophies to that long list, something that’s a massive positive for both himself and Chelsea.
More options going forward
They weren’t exactly big goal scorers last season, bar Diego Costa of course. But, the fact that they’ve leaked five goals in their opening two fixtures means the reliability of their defence is seemingly fading away, so something must change.
Bringing in another forward gives Mourinho options going forward, which hopefully, will change their fortune in front of goal.
Last season, Pedro averaged a goal every 258 minutes, which is a far better record than Oscar and Willian can boast.
His strike rate and shot accuracy are somewhat better too.
Getting one over United
It’s great getting one over your rivals, isn’t it?
With Ed Woodward thinking this was a done deal, it’s only right for Chelsea to nip in there and poach him.
Anyone else remember a similar situation with John Obi Mikel all those years ago?
In fact, the Blues are so used to taking players from their rivals this is almost like Willian 2.0.
Increased width
Chelsea don’t really have too many out-and-out wide options.
Granted, they’ve got Willian, Cuadrado and Moses already, but the latter two aren’t Mourinho’s favourites to say the least.
With that in mind, it leaves Chelsea short of wide options.
Pedro is proven at the highest level, and will hopefully give Chelsea that wide player that they have seemingly been missing since the Arjen Robben days.
Confidence booster
Chelsea seem slightly deflated with everything that’s going on at the moment, and it’s understandable considering their recent success.
The signing of a World Cup winner – who’s only being kept out of the Barcelona side by the most brutal strike force in world football – will certainly give the players, fans, and staff a huge boost.
It will also provide competition for the current crop of players, who seem to have become more than a little bit complacent.
