GettyFloyd Mayweather now officially boasts the greatest boxing record of all time after defeating Conor McGregor at the T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas.
Having stayed true to his word and beating ‘The Notorious’ MMA star on his professional boxing debut, Mayweather has taken his fight record to an unrivalled 50-0.
‘Money’ had already matched Rocky Marciano’s career record of 49-0, but has now surpassed the heavyweight legend – who died in a plane crash on August 31 1969 – the eve of his 46th birthday.
GettyMayweather’s victory will no doubt disappoint the Marciano family.
Rocky Marciano Jr. had said before Mayweather took on McGregor that Floyd Jr. did not deserve to overtake his father for an ‘exhibition fight’.
He told USA Today:
No matter what happens, I don’t think it should go towards Mayweather’s professional career (record), win or lose.
This fight to me isn’t a true boxing match.
PA ImagesWhether you agree or disagree on the validity of the record, consensus is that Mayweather can claim to be boxing’s greatest of all time – and now would probably be the ideal time to hang up the gloves for good (we presume they’d be 10oz).
The question remaining is where does McGregor go from here? Back to the UFC or just off into the sunset having ‘quadrupled’ his net worth?
