Since signing for the Red Devils from Bayern Munich last summer, the World Cup winner has struggled with injury and form, and has been made an outcast at Old Trafford under Jose Mourinho.
At 32, he could be forgiven for wanting to enjoy the twilight years of his career elsewhere, but instead wants to stay and fight for his place at United.
GettySpeaking to German media ahead of his final international appearance on Wednesday, Schweinsteiger said:
My absolute dream would be to play for Manchester United and to help them with their goals.
I have no personal problems with Jose Mourinho. I still believe in my own ability. I could still help United if given the chance.
I have to wait and see now how it goes in September and October and how it develops. One thing is for sure, I’m not going to stop playing football.
GettyDespite not even featuring in a matchday squad this season, Schweinsteiger could find a way into Mourinho’s plans after the United boss confirmed that Marouane Fellaini will be sidelined with a back injury in the coming weeks.
With the transfer window shutting in a matter of hours, it’s testament to the German’s impeccable professionalism that he’s not throwing his toys out of the pram, and demanding that a player who has achieved what he has in the game is not treated better.
He could be forgiven for packing his bags for America or China, but the truth is that he doesn’t need the money, and has a genuine love for the game that is so often missing in today’s football climate.
