It is with great sadness and in no way whatsoever unbridled joy that we report to you that Germany are OUT of the World Cup.
Despite being granted a life-line via Kroos’ final-seconds free-kick against Sweden, the winners of the 2014 tournament have crashed out at the group stage.
We have our Scandinavian brothers Sweden to thank for this, after they beat Mexico 3-0.
The last time Germany failed to progress from the first round of the World Cup was 80 years ago at the 1938 tournament in France. A fact that makes this early exit even more of a failure than it already is.
South Korea scored twice in injury time to send Germany home in the first round.
The first a result of a tense VAR decision, the second after a defensive clanger in the 95th minute.
DFB President Reinhard Grindel said, as per Sky Sports:
We decided in the DFB executive committee before the World Cup to offer a contract extension.
We believe there will be a transition that will take place after the World Cup, regardless of the outcome of the tournament, and no one is better equipped to handle that than Jogi Low.
He proved a year ago at the Confederations Cup that he can make young players into an impressive team who play outstanding football. That is still valid, as far as we are concerned.
It is unknown whether Germany will even qualify for the next World Cup in Qatar judging by their performance in Russia this summer. At the very best they can hope for a 2nd round finish in Euro 2020.
On behalf of England, and our national side – who have successfully progressed through to the last 16 – we wish Low, the boys, and indeed the German fans, a safe flight home.
