Liverpool beat Manchester United 2-0 at Anfield to give them a huge advantage going into the Europa League last 16.
Daniel Sturridge’s penalty put the Reds ahead, before David De Gea put in a superb performance to keep the deficit down to one goal.
However, poor defending from Michael Carrick allowed Roberto Firmino to score a second and the internet responded in typically brutal style.
Here’s the best of the reaction:
Despite it being the Europa League, the atmosphere before the match was electric:
An amazing atmosphere seems weird and unexpected in the Europa League. Like when my brother started cheering at my nan's funeral.

Although this guy is still getting used to the rebranding:
Fabulous You'll Never Walk Alone without the music in the end. Looking forward enormously to this UEFA Cup tie
— Mark Pougatch (@markpougatch) March 10, 2016
Marcus Rashford started again, but had limited time to do anything:
60 – Marcus Rashford needs to be subbed off after 60 minutes as he needs to go home and finish his GCSE coursework. Qualifications.

But it was another striker who grabbed the headlines:

That caused a reaction from everyone’s favourite footballing philosopher:
Begs the question of where was Sturridge during Wembley shootout?
— Joseph Barton (@Joey7Barton) March 10, 2016
Sturridge couldn’t add to his tally though, as David De Gea went into top gear to deny him and Coutinho. Either way, this was ridiculous:

De Gea’s performance meant Man United owed a lot to some failed technology in Madrid:
Imagine where Manchester United would be this season if Real Madrid had a working fax machine. #UEL #LFCvMUFC
— JΛY BUCKS ?? (@TheMasterBucks) March 10, 2016
This guy then came up with the fact of the night:
David De Gea earns less than 3% of Manchester United's total annual wage bill. Weird fact.
— Danny Kelly (@dannykellywords) March 10, 2016
Before United’s pessimists were rightly out in force:
First half positives for @ManUtd 1. It's finished. 2. They only conceded once.
— Simon Stone (@sistoney67) March 10, 2016
They still had a plan though:
If United are going to score it's going to have to be a Mignolet assist #LFCvMUFC
— David Jasper (@david_jasper) March 10, 2016
But this guy was brought on, and Louis van Gaal knew he was knackered:

Allen’s introduction coincided with Firmino’s winner, and Scousers went into full ‘piss take mode’:
YOU SIGNED MEMPHIS WE SIGNED BOBBY FIRMINO
— The Anfield Chat (@TheAnfieldChat) March 10, 2016
And Man Utd fans turned on van Gaal again:

We would say this guy’s got a bit carried away, but he could have a point:
Genuinely horrific performance tonight. Again. Honestly would rather play the U-21's against Liverpool, at least they'd turn up.
— Liam Canning (@LiamPaulCanning) March 10, 2016
This guy summed it up beautifully though:
I remember watching football as a kid you hated seeing your team play Man Utd because you were probably going to lose, now there's no fear
— Vinnyiow (@Vinnyiow) March 10, 2016
Never mind Man United fans, maybe Gary Neville will save you.
