West Brom defender Salomon Rondon broke down in tears after realising he’d badly injured Everton midfielder James McCarthy in a Premier League match this afternoon, (January 20).
Rondon accidentally struck McCarthy’s lower leg from behind as they both challenged for the ball in the second half – brutally snapping both lower leg bones.
Irish international McCarthy was left writhing in agony while Rondon looked on shocked before breaking down in tears when he realised how serious it was.

A photographer captured the stomach-churning moment when McCarthy’s leg broke.
Warning this graphic image is not for the faint hearted:

West Brom were 1-0 up at the time of the injury but Oumar Niasse came on to equalise for Everton, leaving the match 1-1.
Everton manager Sam Allardyce confirmed the extent of the injury to The Mirror:
It’s a tibia and fibula and compounded too, so it’s awful for James.
A compound fracture means the bone broke through the skin.
The brutal injury will probably see McCarthy out of action for at least six months, with Allardyce confirming ‘he won’t be available until next season.’

Yet the injury will outlive the result for both players involved and anyone who watched the moment it happened.
Fans were quick to offer their support to both Rondon and McCarthy after the absolutely terrible injury:

That’s a sick looming injury for James McCarthy. So unlucky, rare does a serious injury come from being kicked on the back of the calf. pic.twitter.com/i0MkJckrXH
