Serena Williams is arguably the best female sportsperson of all time.

Despite that, she certainly has those who throw hate at her – be it for her tennis, her personal life or her appearance.

That’s why, when accepting the Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year award, she made one of the most empowering speeches of all time, and put those haters to bed.

The tennis champion said:

I’ve had people look down on me. I’ve had people put me down because I didn’t look like them – I look stronger. I’ve had people look past me because of the colour of my skin.

I’ve had people overlook me because I was a woman. I had critics say I will never win another grand slam when I was only at number seven and now here I stand today with 21 grand slam titles and I’m still going.

She became the first woman in 32 years to lift the award, and was the first black woman to win it ever.

For our money, she’s a real champion and a massive inspiration.
