Arsenal have striker issues.

Arsene Wenger has been linked with nearly every one of Europe’s top forwards, but has still found time to tell one of his own that he is free to find a new club.

Costa Rica international Joel Campbell is the unlucky man, having failed to make a significant impact during his time at the Emirates.

Despite being at Arsenal since 2011, Campbell has never held down a first team place, and has spent four seasons out on loan.

The former Saprissa speedster is seen as backup to Alexis Sanchez, Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck, and with youngsters Chuba Akpom and Yaya Sanogo coming back from loan spells this summer, competition is set to increase.

The 24-year-old made just 19 league appearances last season, but remains a key player for Costa Rica.

But unlike his national boss, Wenger doesn’t fancy him and he will be allowed to leave this summer if a suitable bid comes in.

There is interest too, with AC Milan and Valencia both keen on a move, either on a permanent basis or on yet another loan deal.

Campbell has had two loan spells in Spain already, scoring two goals in 28 league games for Real Betis, before netting once in 15 outings for Villarreal.

His most successful period was while playing for Olympiakos, where he scored a stunning goal against Manchester United in the Champions League.

It seems strange that Wenger is willing to let an attacking player leave, given his frustrations in the transfer window when it comes to signing a new front man.

Moves for Gonzalo Higuain, Jamie Vardy and Karim Benzema all look to have failed, but Wenger is confident of signing someone to boost his options.
