So it may not be the cupping that has maintained Michael Phelps but a major overhaul in diet – who’d have thought…
As reported by Global News, the 26-time Olympic medalist has dramatically cut his calorie intake, and time spent training.
Back in 2008 the swimmer was taking in roughly 12,000 calories per day, but is now consuming far less than half that amount.
Back when he was 23 Phelps breakfast was made up of: Three fried egg sandwiches loaded with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, fried onions and mayo, two cups of coffee, one five-egg omelette, one bowl of grits, three slices of French toast topped with powdered sugar, and three chocolate chip pancakes.
That would be followed by one pound of enriched pasta, two large ham and cheese sandwiches with mayo on white bread, plus 1,000 calories worth of energy drinks.
And as a younger man Phelps’ would end his day with a calorific pound of pasta, an entire pizza, and more energy drinks.
But times have certainly changed for the man with 22 gold medals…
The swimmer’s daily intake is now a reported 3,529 calories per day eating one large bowl of oatmeal, one large omelette with ham and cheese, Fresh fruit, Coffee, a foot-long meatball marinara sub from Subway, two plates filled with whole grains, Lean meats, and plenty of Fresh vegetables.
The star athlete has also apparently reduced his time in the pool and gym from five hours per day, six days a week, to between two and four hours per day.
Fair play to him, the adjustment seems to be prolonging his Olympic career – and demonstrates perfectly that being at the top of your game is not just about hours in the gym, but fuelling your body correctly.
