Wales defender Chris Gunter is having a pretty great month.
After topping Group B ahead of England, Wales saw off Northern Ireland before claiming a semi final place at Euro 2016 by beating Belgium 3-1 on Friday night.
However, the Reading defender’s incredible on-pitch achievements have come at a cost – he is going to miss his brother’s wedding, even though he’s best man.
The groom, Marc Gunter, is set to marry his girlfriend Danielle in Mexico on Thursday, but thanks to Wales playing Portugal in the first semi final on Wednesday night, Chris will not make the ceremony.
And to make the whole situation even worse for Marc, the Gunter’s parents have also decided to miss the wedding to support Chris as Wales take on Cristiano Ronaldo’s side.
Speaking about the situation, Chris said:
Mum is a bit upset at having to choose. It has caused chaos.
You couldn’t begin to imagine the trouble it’s caused. I’m not sure what Marc will do if we make the final. He might be divorced by then.
Speak to my parents and they’re fuming. It’s Marc’s own fault.
He’s been to every game and hasn’t been at work for a month.
Divorced or not, Chris will make his best man’s speech via Skype, while the rest of the wedding party watch on from sunny Mexico.
Marc and Danielle planned the wedding earlier this year, obviously never thinking that Wales would reach the semi finals in their first ever European Championships.
Marc has been out in France for the majority of the last month, supporting his brother on his incredible journey through the tournament.
In fairness, no one would have expected Wales to get as far as the semis, but maybe if Marc hadn’t arranged the wedding in Mexico, Chris could have jetted back to England to catch the ceremony after the game.
Imagine going from marking Cristiano Ronaldo to doing some damage at a buffet in less than 24 hours – that’s a good day.
