Android 7.0 Nougat

Google’s latest OS, the 7.0 Nougat will begin to make its way to Nexus devices and as we previously reported, the upcoming LG V20 will be the first non-nexus device to run Nougat.

Android 7.0 Nougat is smart and made for you

On its blog yesterday, Google announced that an OTA (Over the Air) update will begin to roll out to those with the Nexus 6, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus 9, Nexus Player, Pixel C and General Mobile 4G (Android One).

If you have also been trying out Nougat in Beta mode, you will also receive the update. So what can you expect from Nougat and why should you care? well, some subtle changes have been made, but all very functional and welcomed.

Expanded Emoji:

There are now over 1,500 different emoji, including 72 new ones.  Soon we won’t be communicating with words, just emoji.

Multi-window:

We’ve seen this one on Samsung devices before, especially the new Galaxy Note 7.  You’ll be able to run two apps side-by-side and the windows are resizable, too, by simply dragging the divider.

Quick Switch:

I don’t know about you, but the way app switching currently works is outdated and I kind of like the way iOS does it, especially when going from an app you’re currently using to the one you were using before, a bit like breadcrumbing.

With Nougat, you can switch between your two most recently used apps by simply double tapping the Overview button.

Quick Settings controls

Something else that’s quick! Quick Settings gives you easy access to things like Bluetooth, WiFi and the all-important flashlight. With Android Nougat, you can actually control what tiles go where, and move ‘em around to fit your needs.

Battery life will improve

There’s a feature called “Doze”, very American  I know!  Doze is even dozier when your device is in your pocket or bag while on the move, basically when not in use, Nougat gets smarter by dropping  into lower power usage mode to save battery without losing functionality.

When Nougat lands on your device, there are plenty more features to look forward to like better security, improved boot up time and more, but those are some of the features that should get you excited.
