Anonymous have targeted some pretty evil people and organisations in the last couple of years, Isis, the Saudi Arabian government, the KKK and even Donald Trump (fair enough), but now they’ve turned their attention to the shocking whaling industry in Japan.
The hacktivist group have reportedly attacked at least 97 websites in Japan since September as part of a campaign against whaling, police have revealed.
Japanese broadcaster NHK said that Anonymous had brought down websites of groups involved in dolphin and whale hunting, government officers, news organisations and airports, as well as the personal website of Japanese PM, Shinzo Abe.
Anonymous and animal rights defenders across the planet have been protesting Japan’s barbaric whaling practice for decades. Despite Japan banning commerical whaling a fair few years ago, they still hunt whales for scientific research.
However, last year the International Court of Justice ruled that their nation had failed to defend its scientific research, where they would kill 333 whales a year so it can “find out how the marine ecosystem is changing”. Ironic, don’t you think?
They were ordered to stop their practice through a year suspension, but since then this horrific practice has now resumed.
Japanese police warned that it’s likely these cyber attacks will only increase in the run up to next year’s G7 summit.
