Yesterday, we reported on a bizarre tweet made by Edward Snowden that prompted rabid speculation as to what it could mean.

Well, never let it be said that the Internet’s getting more rational because today they decided it probably meant he was dead.

Conspiracy theorists sent Twitter into meltdown (seriously, let’s pray they’ve renewed their fire insurance) yesterday when Snowden tweeted a string of nonsense gibberish that they believe to be a secret message.

Things took a sinister turn, however, when the tweet was deleted, prompting a handful of people to speculate that the code was a deadman’s switch and that Snowden had been executed by the Russians, The Daily Star reports.

The idea being that Snowden programmed a bot to send out the code tweet unless he stopped it, either by visiting Twitter or entering a password, and that it will act as the key to more leaked documents he’s left with journalists.

The code is just one in a number of cryptic tweets the former CIA employee has sent in the last week.

On Wednesday, Snowden tweeted:

Did you work with me? Have we talked since 2013? Please recontact me securely. It’s time.

Fans immediately began to speculate that he was about to release more confidential documents but none came, adding fire to the speculation that he may be dead.

Unfortunately for the conspiracy theorists, there’s a slight problem with their intricate theory – an associate of Snowden’s, the journalist Glenn Greenwald, has said that he’s fine.

But, of course, that’s just what they want you to think…
