Elon Musk has vowed to fix South Australia’s power problem in 100 days or it’s free.

The billionaire Tesla founder threw down the challenge to the Australian government yesterday after Tesla executive Lyndon Rive said the company could install the 100-300 megawatt hours of battery storage required to prevent the power shortages that have been causing blackouts in the state. He also said they could do it in 100 days.

Asked on Twitter how serious he was about the offer, Elon Musk replied: “Tesla will get the system installed and working 100 days from contract signature or it is free. That serious enough for you?”

Cannon-Brookes is the co-founder of Australian software maker Atlassian Corp. Offering to ‘make the $ happen (& politics)’, he told to Musk: “You’re on mate.”

And it seems everyone’s keen to get on Musks’ offer. SA Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young also replied: “Let’s talk!”

The state of South Australia has suffered from power shortages since September last year, sparking price spikes, prolonged blackouts and political brawls over battery power – Tesla’s pitch to the state offering grid scale battery storage could solve this.

The countdown is on.
