Google gets the go-ahead to test delivery drones in the US. Rival Amazon also recently announced they will be testing their Unmanned Aerial Vehicle in the UK, as they found US regulators to be a lot more strict in comparison to the UK.
The FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) in America have granted Google’s parent company Alphabet the permission to fly their delivery drones.
Google’s research division, ‘X’ will soon begin testing drones that weigh less than 25kg in designated areas as part of the company’s Project Wing introduced last year.
Google Project Wing was first introduced it last year
In the video released by Google, a delivery drone was trialled with a first aid kit, candy bars, dog treats, and water delivered to a couple of Australian farmers.
“We’re only just beginning to develop the technology to make a safe delivery system possible, but we think that there’s tremendous potential to transport goods more quickly, safely and efficiently.” said Google
The main concern for delivery drones is how they integrate with air traffic, manage collision and the safety of the items they’re tasked with delivering.
Over the coming month, we’ll keep an eye on both Google and Amazon to see how their delivery drones progress and hopefully become a reality.
