The fun could be over as Netflix announce they will put a stop to users viewing content from other countries.
That’s right, the video-streaming giant is cracking down on viewers using proxies to sneakily view content that’s not available in their own countries.
According to CNET, Netflix bosses said the company plans to take new steps to prevent customers from streaming content that isn’t technically available in their country.
David Fullagar, Vice President of content delivery architecture at Netflix, wrote in a blog post:
The company is hoping to ban users gaining greater access via proxies immediately and expect subscribers using them to find they only have access to their own country’s content within the week.
The streaming service is now available in a whopping 190 countries and has about 70 million subscribers worldwide, but there is a huge difference between the content available. For example, Netflix users in Australia receive just 10 per cent of the content users in the US can view.
The differences are purely down to licensing agreements, but Netflix says it is trying to expand the agreements worldwide as soon as possible.
Fullagar explained:
If all of our content were globally available, there wouldn’t be a reason for members to use proxies or un-blockers to fool our systems into thinking they’re in a different country than they’re actually in.
In the meantime, we will continue to respect and enforce content licensing by geographic location.
