Jim Carrey is taking the plunge and deleting his Facebook page.
But it’s not to escape his annoying auntie who overuses the ‘like’ button or to rid himself of that ranting social media political activist he met one time down the pub.
The Liar, Liar actor is choosing to step away from the social media circus for a reason of politics, though.
He believes Mark Zuckerberg’s multibillion-dollar sharing site ‘profited from Russian interference’ in the US elections. After making the accusation, Carrey also urged others users to halt their keyboard wars and stop using Facebook too.
Attaching a hand-drawn picture of Mark Zuckerberg next to a thumbs down (or ‘dislike’) he wrote:
I’m dumping my @facebook stock and deleting my page because @facebook profited from Russian interference in our elections and they’re still not doing enough to stop it.
I encourage all other investors who care about our future to do the same. #unfriendfacebook.
Back in June 2016, the Washington Post reported hackers working for the Russian government accessed the Democratic National Committee (DNC) computer system, stealing oppositional research on Donald Trump and viewing staffers’ emails and chat exchanges.
The Kremlin, however, denies that the government was linked to the hack, and a US official states investigators have not yet concluded that the cyberattack was directed by the Russian government.
A probe into cyber espionage during the presidential campaign later revealed hackers did not breach voting machines or computers that tallied election results, but The Kremlin ‘meddled in other ways’.
Meanwhile, Carrey has been embroiled in a number of headlines recently, with the tragic death of his ex-girlfriend Cathriona White, which preceded a number of public appearances, leaving fans worried about the Hollywood star’s stability.
In October things got particularly bizarre when he appeared on the Norm MacDonald Live podcast, in which he took apart the set and ‘sandbagged’ his arm to stop himself from using his phone.
He also talked about ‘erasing’ himself while claiming he has no ego whatsoever.
He told Norm:
I’m erasing myself, like, I’m not even f*cking here right now. I don’t exist, I have no needs, I don’t need you people. None of it, nothing. I don’t need approval from anybody.
There’s no ‘me’ involved. I’ve already crossed the river of tears. All I need is water and to drink it in interesting ways.
The actor, who famously starred in The Truman Show, also gave a rather strange interview at the 2017 New York Fashion Week Harper’s Bazaar Icons Party.
After an E! News reporter asked what designer he was wearing, many thought he was trolling the press and the wider cult of celebrity as he told her, ‘There’s no meaning to any of this‘.
However, others were concerned this encounter reflected his well-documented mental health struggles.
He also recently starred in a Netflix documentary, titled Jim & Andy, following his controversial method acting practice on the set of Man On The Moon, the 1999 biopic of comedian Andy Kaufmann..
