Motorola has officially confirmed it’s been working on a foldable smartphone.

In an interview with Engadget, Motorola’s Vice President of Global Product, Dan Dery, confirmed the company have been working on a new phone for quite some time.

Without revealing too much, he indicated the device would be similar to the original Razr flip phone Motorola first brought out in 2005.

This similar design means the screen will be on the interior of the phone.

Confirmation of them working on the phone ends a month of speculation about the comeback.

In January, The Wall Street Journal reported the next Motorola device would have a foldable display, in keeping with current trends in the smartphone world.

The Razr, which was first released in 2004, sold over 50 million units worldwide, before being replaced by the Razr2 just three years later.

The phones were one of the most popular to purchase before the release of the first iPhone, in 2007.

Dery also confirmed Motorola had always planned to make a new flip phone:

We started to work on foldables a long time ago, and we have been doing a lot of iteration.

Speaking about when the phone may come out, he revealed they have ‘no intention of coming later than everybody else in the market.’

With the Samsung Galaxy Fold due for release in April, and the Huawei Mate X coming in the summer, we can expect to see the revamped Razr in the shops around the same time.

Despite confirmation the device is coming soon, Dery didn’t have too much to say about the design of the phone.

However, we already know from patents filed in December 2018 the phone will have a similar design to the Razr.

Now we know the phone is coming, I’m getting myself ready for a good slice of noughties nostalgia!
