First the headphone jack, then the home button, now this?
If you were hoping for a cool new curved OLED display screen on your iPhone 8, you may be left disappointed.
It’s one of the new handsets most anticipated features, but if a report by some tech experts is anything to go by, it won’t be happening.
“We anticipate Apple will adopt a flat implementation of OLED design on their special iPhone model, which is analogous to the current 2.5D glass design,” IHS Markit analyst Wayne Lam told MacRumors.
Instead, Lam anticipates a touchscreen with a longer screen ‘to take advantage of higher coverage area of the iPhone in its entirety’
The ratio of the new LG G6 screen sits at a 2:1 aspect ratio, meaning the screen’s length is double the size of its width. iPhones, on the other hand, currently have a 16:9 aspect ratio.
But one of the reasons Apple may decide to ditch the curved display idea and go with a longer screen instead may in buyers’ best interest. According to Apple Insider and TrendForce, curved glass has been suffering in terms of drop-test results.
The tech giant has been rumoured to be adopting curved screens similar to Samsung’s Galaxy S7 Edge and has even thought to have signed a $4.3 billion deal to buy OLED panels from Samsung.
But reports suggest the iPhone 8 will instead use the same ‘2.5D’ glass found on the iPhone 7, meaning the display will be largely flat except for rounded edges.
On one hand, the screen will last longer when dropped compared to its curved Samsung counterpart, but on the other, a flat screen just doesn’t look as cool.
