The iPhone 8 doesn’t even have a release date yet, but there’s already plenty of intel circulating about it’s brand new features.
Thanks to shady leaks and tech experts, we know the new iPhone may have a completely redesigned home button, a new port to charge your phone, and a potentially even bigger screen.
There are also a lot of things we don’t know, but one thing we assumed we could rely on was the name.
Like it’s predecessors before it, Apple iPhones have continuously had number-related names – the iPhone 3G, 4, 5, 6… you get the point.
So it would only make sense that the eighth version of the classic Apple handset would be called the iPhone 8. Right? Wrong.
According to a new report from Mac Otakara the new phone won’t be called the ‘iPhone 8’, or even the ‘iPhone X’. It will be called the ‘iPhone Edition’.
To the every-day Apple user, that name is pretty f*cking boring. The kind of name a company gives something to make it sound luxurious when really it runs like a 20-year-old Nissan Micra.
But it turns out there is good reason for the name change.
Apparently, the name will be used as a way to show Apple fans the phone is a top end model, rather than just the latest edition in a line of handsets. And it makes sense, the ‘Watch Edition’ is the name given to the company’s top of the line (and ridiculously expensive) Apple Watch.
And that makes even more sense when you consider how much the ‘iPhone Edition’ is going to cost.
According to recent reports, the new handset will be the most expensive Apple has ever launched. Ready to reach deep into your pockets? KGI Securities’ Ming-Chi Kuo claims the new iPhone will cost a startling $1,000. For comparison, the iPhone 7 cost $649 when it was released last year.
But don’t worry just yet, the tech giant is set to launch iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus alongside the iPhone Edition, it has been claimed.
Hopefully we don’t have to reach as deep for those.
