Dominic Lipinski/PASmartphone batteries are pretty inconsistent in terms of how long a charge will last, but that’s all about to change apparently.
According to the Daily Mail, a firm which manufactures tiny hydrogen fuel cells which can power batteries for up to a week has signed a deal to put that technology in mobile phones.
Intelligent Energy have not confirmed who they’ve signed the deal with, but have referred to them as an ’emerging operator.’
The deal will allegedly be worth $7.6 million (roughly £5.25 million).
Intelligent EnergyJulian Hughes, acting managing director for Intelligent Energy’s Consumer Electronics division, is reported by the Mail as saying:
We have been working with the [manufacturer] over recent weeks, demonstrating to them what our hydrogen fuel cell technology can achieve when embedded into a smartphone.
We believe embedding fuel cell technology into portable devices provides a solution to the current dilemma of battery life and with consumers demanding more and more from their phones, battery innovation has not kept up.
What we offer is a solution that is clean and efficient and means consumers could be truly mobile and free from the constraints of the grid.
The technology is reportedly a scaled down version of what’s being developed within eco-friendly cars, and the battery contains hydrogen and oxygen, only emitting heat and water as waste.
Apparently the fuel cell in its current form would already fit comfortably within an iPhone 6, with the only mod required being an air vent to allow water vapour to escape.
So hopefully Dave Grohl will be able to stop chucking away expensive handsets sooner rather than later!
