An American startup has decided to act against popular consensus and produce a gun that is easier to hide, and harder for anyone to identify.

The ‘Ideal Conceal’ is a .380-caliber derringer with two bullets loaded in two barrels, and when it is folded in a closed position it looks like an iPhone.

The ‘Ideal Conceal’ website says:

Ingeniously designed to resemble a smartphone, yet with one click of the safety it opens and is ready to fire. Smartphones are everywhere, so your new pistol will easily blend in with today’s environment. In its locked position it will be virtually undetectable because it hides in plain sight.

Kirk Kjellberg is developing the weapon and told CNN Money that he’s already had over 2,500 email enquiries.

But the deceptive nature of the gun is worrying, according to police.

Bill Johnson, of the National Association of Police Organisations, said:

In general, the concept of any kind of weapon that’s disguised, so that it’s not apparent that it’s a weapon, would be cause for concern.

Yes, it is only a two-shot pistol, and on that basis wouldn’t be the weapon of choice for a mass shooting, but it only takes one shot to kill somebody.

The ideal conceal will cost a reported $395 -roughly £280- and Kjellberg is allegedly already working on a semi-automatic version for 2018.

For fuck’s sake…
