Many of us won’t have had much time with the Fallout series before 3, but that might be about to change with a mod that’s bringing the original game to the New Vegas engine.
Fallout the Story is a work in progress by fans of the series, and is designed as a mod for the New Vegas base game only. The mod is attempting to stay as true to the original as possible, while bringing the updated graphics and exploration opportunities up to scratch.
Fallout came out way back in 1997 and tasked the players with leaving their Vault to find a water chip. In the video below, we see this opening sequence remade in the mod.
Once outside the Vault, the video shows the table-top style map the game utilises. In this mode, you will come across random encounters that you will be able to deal with or flee. Pretty neat.
The modders say Vault 13 and Vault 15 are complete, Shady Sands is close and Junktown is well on the way. Other areas like Necropolis and The Glow have also been started.
This could be a great starting point for fans of the latter games who want to experience more of the history, but in familiar surroundings. You can check out the mod’s progress on NexusMods.
