Grief is a strange thing and everyone deals with loss and death in different ways but Danny Dyer has taken a recent homage to the late, great Amy Winehouse to new levels of weird.

On Channel 5‘s Lip Sync Battle, the 39-year-old TV hard man and Eastenders actor opted to dress up in drag as Ms. Winehouse, who died in July 2011, and perform one of her beautifully melancholic hits.

Which, if you ask me, is probably bottom of the list of things to do in honour of the singer, who tragically joined the 27 club after suffering fatal alcohol poisoning in her Camden home.

Danny Dyer donned a red dress, a beehive wig, tattoos, winged eyeliner and high heels to perform his ode to Amy, after lip syncing to a Kasabian track in the first round.

Danny told The Sun:

I was born to do this — to be a rock star. There’s no way in the world I will lose to Craig fucking Revel Horwood. Of course he’s my enemy tonight and he always will be.

During the performance, Danny sat at a makeshift bar, smoking, and raised a glass to Amy, who had suffered with alcohol addiction throughout her adult life.

We’ve had enough practise honouring dead musicians, particularly in the past year, which has seen the passing of Prince, Bowie, George Michael, Leonard Cohen and Glenn Frey. Apparently though, Danny (or the producers) missed the lesson on empathy…

As it’s clear Danny is a fan of the Back In Black singer’s music, let’s just hope Ms. Winehouse’s family and friends find the homage in good taste rather than offensive.
