British strongman Eddie Hall left viewers and fellow competitors in awe as he smashed a world record at Europe’s Strongest Man – but the successful attempt came at a cost.
28-year-old Hall became the first man to successfully deadlift 500kg – that’s half a ton – but passed out and was left bloodied by nose bleeds.
The man himself confirmed that blood vessels were exploding in his head, leaving him uncertain as to whether he’d attempt the amazing lift again in future.
He told the Yorkshire Evening Post:
That nearly killed me. The pressure on my body was surreal. I passed out after. I had nose bleeds. It’s not healthy doing something like that.
But I’ve done it. I’m sure it will be in the history books for a very long time.
I don’t want to do it again but if it comes to the point where somebody breaks it, hell…I may just do.
It’s that great feeling, like the first man on the moon, the first man to run a mile in under four minutes. And now I’m the first to deadlift half a ton. It’s history and I’m very proud to be a part of it.
The Beast’s challenge for Europe’s Strongest Man understandably came to an end due to the effort required for the lift, but he now has his sights set on the world title.
Hall added:
The World’s Strongest Man title is my dream. And I will keep pushing the limits until that happens. It’s going to happen.
Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson – AKA The Mountain in HBO’s Game of Thrones – was also in competition in Leeds, but failed to defend his crown for a third time with Laurence Shahlaei of Swindon taking the title.
33-year-old Shahlaei broke a record of his own en route to victory, completing the 20 metre car carry course in just 11.05 seconds.
These guys are incredible!
