Austin Harrouff’s father, Wade, broke down in tears during his appearance on Dr. Phil as he apologised to the victims’ families reports The Mirror.
In a preview of the show, Wade described his son’s ‘manic behaviour’ in the days leading up to the attack, claiming the 19-year-old’s personality had changed drastically about two weeks before the killings.
He described a dinner with Austin and his sister at a restaurant during which the teen stormed off to his mum’s house where he attempted to down vegetable oil.
According to a spokesperson for Dr. Phil Austin’s worrying behaviour caused his mum Mina to call 911, saying her son had been acting strangely for days and claiming he had superpowers.
However, before the call was connected, Austin left her house and reportedly headed back to the restaurant before he left again to walk back to his dad’s house.
FacebookAccording to police, it was on this walk that he allegedly murdered John Stevens and his wife Michelle.
A neighbour who reportedly tried to intervene was also knifed – but survived and managed to call emergency services.
During the exclusive interview, Wade addressed the victims’ families, saying:
This is the worst thing I could think of, this is the biggest nightmare I could ever dream of.
I’m deeply sorry for what my son did to those people. And I’ll apologise for him, because my own son would have never done that… He’s such a good person.
FacebookAlthough he was found to have no traces of drugs in his body, police have speculated that he could have been under the influence of synthetic drug flakka.
It will take up to three weeks for the results from tests to come through, though in the meantime Austin remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital.
