Horror films have taught us to fear remote cabins in the woods, but these images will soon have you making a u-turn and seeking a secluded retreat.

Instagram page Cabin Porn has drawn a large online following for publishing images of both spectacular and strange getaways.

The page has done so well that a book has been released to tell the back story of a handful of fascinating cabins, and some of them look completely insane.

You have to admire the ingenuity of the guys who built these things, whether it be for their ability to tie the buildings in with nature, or for creating such viable shelters out of unconventional materials.

An online description of the official Cabin Porn book describes the collection like so, ‘With their idyllic settings, unique architecture and cozy interiors, the Cabin Porn photographs, are an invitation to slow down, take a deep breath, and feel the beauty and serenity that nature and simple construction can create.’

The book’s author, Cabin Porn owner, and co-founder of Vimeo Zack Klein says the book provided an opportunity to speak in greater detail about certain properties, and offer advice on how to set up your own scenic retreat. He said:

Although the site is prolific, it’s fairly one-dimensional. Each entry features only an image, brief description, location, and a credit to the submitter. Our brevity results from a decision we made a long time ago that we would never make the blog something more than we could maintain ourselves with the time we had on hand. In other words, the format is designed so that we always have enough time to keep it up. So many great blogs die because they’re too ambitious. The trade-off is that over the years, we’ve missed many opportunities to tell great stories about the people who made these buildings. The book was our chance to do that, our reconciliation for the stories we didn’t tell. So that’s what we made.”
