Getting a job in 2018 is bloody difficult, especially if you’ve just come out of university.
You’re fresh-faced, ready for you and your degree to take on the world. Only to be crushed in your naivety as you find out the recruitment system is corrupt and it’s not about what you know – but who you know.
Then you have someone like MP, and the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Esther McVey, telling teens to get a summer job. What do you think they’ve been trying to do Esther?!
Some have even resorted to desperate tactics, such as college graduate David Casarez who, despite being homeless, found an innovative way of handing out his CV.
It paid off too, as his unique approach caught the attention of potential employers like Google, Netflix and LinkedIn.
Casarez was spotted last week, (Friday, July 29) in the Bay Area, USA, wearing a shirt and tie, handing out his CV with a sign which said:
HOMELESS. HUNGRY 4 SUCCESS. TAKE A RESUME.
Jasmine Scoffield saw David at the traffic lights of El Camino and San Antonio in Mountain View. She took a photo of him and posted it later in the day, along with his resumé.
In her twitter post she wrote:
Today I saw this young homeless man asking for people to take a resume rather than asking for money.
If anyone in the Silicon Valley could help him out, that would be amazing. Please RT so we can help David out!
Jasmine’s post soon went viral and the online community even started a hashtag #GetDavidAJob on Twitter – which began trending.
According to Jasmine, who spoke with David on the phone for an hour, he’d come to Silicon Valley with dreams of being successful in the tech industry.
She went on to add:
He’s sleeping in parks & still trying to get freelance work, interviews, and applications in.
Since the post going viral, Jasmine states big tech companies like Google and Netflix ‘have already reached out’ to him.
Speaking to the New York Post, David confirmed ‘Google reached out to me’ as well as Pandora, Bitcoin and ‘a bunch of startups’.
Speaking about Bitcoin, David said the Product Manager wanted to know if he ‘could work remotely’ or ‘relocate to Tokyo’.
However, he went on to say:
But tonight, I’ll be back on my bench in Rengstorff Park.
According to the NY Post, he graduated with a degree in management information systems from Texas A&M University. Afterwards, he landed a top web developer job at General Motors in Austin, but he cashed out on his 401-K (retirement savings plan sponsored by an employer), and moved to Silicon Valley to start up his own tech company — which ran out of cash in June.
He explains he’s been living in his 2015 Ford Transit Connect utility van for over a year, which was repossessed last month.
A former classmate of David got in contact with Jasmine on Twitter and told her:
I went to college and had multiple classes with him. He’s a great person…from what I know he went to chase his dream in Cali.
He also wrote:
He was a good friend as well, we would work together some times on projects. [sic]
I always wished him the best when I heard he left a good company but it’s really hard for developers especially in Silicon Valley. I hope he makes it big one day. I truly do. [sic]
