Teenagers are ingesting dishwasher cleaning detergent pods in a dangerous new craze.
The online trend is causing concern among doctors and parents as – really can’t believe this has to be explained – detergent is not meant to be eaten and could have adverse effects on children’s and grown ups’ bodies.
The moronic video challenge has seen loads of kids, who look about 12-years-old, biting into Tide laundry pods.
Printed boldly on the packaging for the detergent is: ‘May be harmful if swallowed’.
Remember when kids used to do cool rebellious stuff?
The ‘Tide Pod Challenge’, as it’s called, is simple. Pop one in your mouth and bite down on the seal to release the brightly-coloured blue and green liquid soap and powdered detergent.
Most of them spit it out because it’s soap and surprisingly doesn’t taste nice because it’s supposed to clean deep stains out of clothing.
Some people are even chasing vodka with the detergent tablets. They’re the new lime to a tequila it seems.
Dr. Alfred Aleguas Jr., managing director of the Florida Poison Information Center in Tampa, said to Maxim:
If someone mimicked the College Humor video, they could find themselves in a life-threatening situation.
Swallowing even a small amount of the highly-concentrated detergent found in pods can cause diarrhea and vomiting.
In some cases, some of the detergent could even find its way into the lungs and cause breathing difficulties.
Of course there is plenty of banter surrounding this outrageous trend…
Why would you eat soap when there are things like fried chicken out there?
I never thought I’d say this, but take me back to 2017.
Rebelling used to mean sneaking out when you were grounded or watching an 18-rated movie while your parents were out.
Now the children of the world are so bored that they are ingesting soap tablets.
Help.
