Nicole Kidman has clapped back (ahem) at her haters, after her unusual style of applause went viral at the Academy Awards.

The Oscar’s ceremony this year was full of drama, theatrics and public vitriol.

But no spectacle was stranger, according to Twitter, than Nicole Kidman and her clapping.

Floods of Tweets were posted by observers. In their droves, people questioned who taught Nicole to clap her fellow thespians in such an odd, seal-like manner.

According to radio presenter, Kyle Sandilands, who co-hosts KIIS1065‘s Kyle and Jackie O, ‘They’re putting it on the big screen at Sea World with a [sea lion sound] thing!’

Some even compared her particular style to the Grinch.

During a phone interview, Kyle posed a theory to Nicole that she couldn’t clap effectively due to the huge rocks the Hollywood actress was wearing on her fingers.

Nicole was quick to confirm this was true, explaining:

You are so right Kyle. It was really difficult because I had a huge ring on which was not my own, but was absolutely gorgeous and I was terrified of damaging it.

It’s so true, I’m so glad you clarified that. It was really awkward and I was like gosh, I want to clap, I don’t want to not be clapping, which is worse, right… ‘Why isn’t Nicole clapping?’

It was a tough night for 49-year-old Kidman, who was nominated for best supporting actress for her role in Lion, but lost out to Viola Davis.

Still, I applaud Nicole for her honesty on the matter.
