Have you ever spotted those little coloured squares on the end of your toothpaste tube?

Nope, me neither, but apparently there are a lot of people who have – and believe they have uncovered an incredibly sinister plot by the global toothpaste cartel.

The little squares come in green, blue, red and black, The Sun reports. And some people think that these colours indicate how many chemicals you are consuming as you banish that unholy morning breath.

Apparently the different coloured squares reveal how toxic each toothpaste is, with various sources theorising that they correspond like so…

If you’re lucky enough to purchase some Colgate with a green square then rejoice – your toothpaste is completely natural, or as natural as something made from abrasives, fluoride, and detergents can be.

Blue square means that it’s mostly natural, but that there are some ‘medicines’ combined with it, which doesn’t sound great.

The red mark also denotes a natural mix, although this time your refreshing mouth cleanser is tainted by chemicals – usually a pretty bad sign.

And fuck me you don’t want a black square – these unlucky bastards are cleaning their teeth with pure chemicals.

But before you run to the bathroom to wash your mouth out with soap, don’t worry too much, as it’s been debunked as a myth.

The truth is actually really boring, with the squares being a part of the manufacturing process known as ‘eye marks’. They contain hidden information that the high-speed machinery in the factory uses to tell where the packaging needs to be cut and folded.

Or maybe that’s just what they want you to think… *places tin foil hat on head and burns whole bathroom just to be sure*.
