Villagers have confirmed that, contrary to popular belief, the Corona millionaire has not bequeathed them his fortune.
Yesterday, news outlets reported that 99-year-old Antonino Fernández – CEO of Grupo Modelo who brew Corona beer – left part of his $169 million estate to the 80 residents of Cerezales del Condado in the northwest of Spain.
But it seems the villagers were pretty surprised to read these reports in reputable news outlets from The Telegraph to the Daily Mail (cough) and even the BBC, as they’d not seen a dime.
In an awkward – and sad – twist it turns out Fernández, who passed away in August, hasn’t made the villagers millionaires. The reports were confirmed to be false by a charitable arts and culture foundation set up by Fernández.
Lucia Alajos, the communications chief at Fundación Cerezales Antonino y Cinia, categorically denied these reports.
He told Mashable:
I can confirm he didn’t leave money to his villagers in his will.
His family recently opened his will and we actually don’t know who got the money from the inheritance. But it’s definitely not the town or his neighbours.
Some family members have a house in the village, but they don’t live there. They just come during the holidays.
While Fernández will be remembered for his other philanthropic dealings, unfortunately, this story will not be among them.
Let this be a lesson that not everything you read should be believed.
